Baluarte de Santo Domingo

The Baluarte de Santo Domingo sits at the western edge of Cartagena’s walled city, distinguished by the massive stone ramparts that jut out toward the Caribbean Sea. Construction finished in sixteen seventeen to guard the entrance to the bay from privateers and invading fleets. During the siege of seventeen forty-one, British Admiral Edward Vernon unleashed a massive bombardment against this very bastion. The thick masonry held, leaving deep scars from cannonballs that remain visible in the stone blocks to this day.
