Plaza de San Pedro Claver

The Plaza de San Pedro Claver features a collection of scrap metal sculptures of animals, which stand in stark contrast to the heavy, colonial stone facade of the adjacent church. Pedro Claver lived in the monastery here during the seventeenth century, dedicating his life to baptizing and providing for enslaved people arriving from Africa. He refused to leave the dockside even when the city was besieged by plague. The plaza serves as the final resting place for his remains inside the church.
