Plaza de Bolívar

The Plaza de Bolívar features a dense canopy of tall, leafy trees that shade the stone paths and cast patterns across the colonial balconies surrounding it. This square began as the Plaza de la Inquisición, the site where the colonial court displayed its authority. In eighteen ninety-six, the city installed a bronze statue of Simon Bolívar in the center, and the square took his name. Local residents often sit here in the afternoons, watching the green iguanas that roam through the branches.
