Plaza de Santo Domingo

The Plaza de Santo Domingo features a bronze sculpture by Fernando Botero titled Gertrudis, a reclining female figure with exaggerated proportions that draws crowds of visitors rubbing her skin for good luck. This square was the center of colonial social life, anchored by the seventeenth century church and monastery of the same name. During the Inquisition, the plaza served as a primary site for public executions. Today, the surrounding balconies host cafes, replacing the former atmosphere of tension with the constant hum of conversation.
