Universidad de Cartagena Claustro de la Merced

The Claustro de la Merced is defined by the heavy, whitewashed stone buttresses that press against its thick exterior walls. Built by the Dominican Order in the seventeenth century, this structure served as both a convent and a university for theology and philosophy. It houses the remains of Rafael Nunez, a four-time president of Colombia who wrote the national anthem. During his presidency, he chose this very site as his final resting place, cementing the building as a central figure in Colombian political history.
