Heredia Theatre

The Heredia Theatre rises above the streets of Cartagena with a facade covered in intricate stone carvings and topped by a distinctive, tiered cupola. It sits on the foundations of a seventeenth century church, the Iglesia de la Merced. When the city decided to build a theatre in the early nineteen hundreds, they dismantled the ruins and incorporated the original stones into the new structure. A local merchant reportedly insisted that the theater bear the name of his family to preserve their legacy.
