Tvrđava Lovrjenac / Lovrjenac Fortress

Lovrjenac Fortress perches on a jagged, thirty-seven-meter-tall rock isolated from the main city walls of Dubrovnik. This detached stone bastion served as the city's primary western defense, guarding the approach by sea and land. When Venice attempted to build its own fort here in the eleventh century, the locals hauled materials up the cliff overnight and finished their own structure first. An inscription above the gate still warns of the cost of freedom, carved directly into the living rock face.
