The Bastion Priuli is the jagged, heavy stone wedge jutting out from the southwestern corner of the Venetian defensive walls in Split. It was built in the sixteen sixties to anchor the city against Ottoman raids, replacing older, crumbling medieval fortifications. Alvise Zorzi, the Venetian provveditore, pushed for this massive upgrade to support heavy artillery. During the construction, laborers unearthed Roman inscriptions, which they simply set directly into the new masonry, where they remain embedded in the outer walls today.
