Saint Domnius’ Cathedral

The bell tower of Saint Domnius Cathedral rises above the stone labyrinth of Split. Its limestone facade incorporates Romanesque carvings and repurposed columns from the ruins of Diocletian’s Palace, which anchors the entire structure. Inside the cathedral, a stark, octagonal layout reveals its original purpose as the mausoleum for the Emperor Diocletian. In the fourth century, the builder of this chamber sought to bury his remains here, never imagining that his tomb would become the liturgical heart of a Christian cathedral.
