Church and Convent of St. Francis

The Church and Convent of St. Francis sits at the western end of the Split waterfront, marked by a plain, stone facade that contrasts with the bustling harbor. Franciscan monks arrived here in the thirteenth century, taking over an older church dedicated to Saint Felix. Inside the convent lies the tomb of Marko Marulic, the father of Croatian literature. He spent his final years here, and the monks still keep his portrait and a collection of his manuscripts within these quiet walls.
