Tvrđava Gripe

The stone walls of Tvrđava Gripe form a jagged, star-shaped perimeter atop the hill, distinct from the Roman stonework found down by the sea. Built by the Venetians in the sixteen fifties, the fort served as a defensive shield for Split against Ottoman incursions. During the construction, laborers dismantled local churches and homes to source the necessary rock. The structure remains a heavy, fortified presence, keeping watch over the harbor while housing the Croatian Maritime Museum within its thick, silent ramparts.
