The Diocletian Palace is a massive stone fortress with walls that rise sixty feet above the ground. While it bears the name of a city center today, it began as the retirement villa for the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the year three hundred and five. The emperor spent his final years here cultivating cabbages in his gardens after becoming the only Roman leader to ever voluntarily abdicate his throne. Locals later moved into the imperial chambers, building their homes directly into the ancient walls.
