Cyprian's Palace

Diocletian’s Palace shows its age through a jagged stone skeleton embedded directly into the fabric of modern Split. The Roman emperor Diocletian built this fortress in three hundred five as his retirement villa, packing it with high walls and military gates. Centuries later, the local residents moved in, filling the imperial courtyards with shops, homes, and laundry lines. The temple of Jupiter still stands in the center, flanked by the private apartments where the emperor once watched the Adriatic Sea.
