Venetian Tower

The Venetian Tower stands as a rugged stone remnant of the western defensive wall once protecting the old city of Split. Its dark, weathered masonry contrasts with the nearby palace walls, marking the expansion of Venetian influence during the fifteenth century. Soldiers manned this position to watch the sea, tracking trade ships and potential invaders. During the renovation of the area in the late eighteen hundreds, workers found Venetian coins embedded in the mortar, tucked there by the masons who finished the stonework.
