Split Synagogue

The Split Synagogue occupies the second floor of a narrow, medieval stone house tucked deep within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace. Its most distinguishing feature is the wooden aron kodesh, a sacred ark built into the wall during the sixteenth century. When the Jewish community arrived in Split, they carved their sanctuary directly into the existing Roman structure. Local families hid the ark during the Second World War, dismantling it board by board to keep the religious scroll safe from occupying forces.
