The Lazareta stone walls form a long, weathered barrier stretching along the eastern edge of the Split harbor. Built in the seventeenth century, these structures served as a quarantine station for sailors and merchants arriving from plague-stricken regions. Ships had to drop anchor and wait behind these walls for forty days before their crews could enter the city. The Venetian authorities enforced this isolation, hoping to protect the lucrative trade hub from the outbreaks that frequently devastated Mediterranean ports during that era.
