Church of St. Roch

A single stone relief of Saint Roch clutching his staff and pointing toward his plague sore distinguishes this small chapel from the surrounding walls of the palace. Built in sixteen hundred and three, the church emerged as a vow from the citizens of Split to escape the bubonic plague. Local stonemasons carved the facade, which remains tucked into the dense Roman masonry. Inside, a wooden altar piece depicts the saint, who spent his life tending to the sick before eventually succumbing to illness himself.
