The Palace of Diocletian dominates the center of Split with its heavy, limestone walls that still trace the floor plan of a Roman military fort. Emperor Diocletian ordered its construction in the year three hundred and five to serve as his retirement villa. When the surrounding city of Salona fell, local refugees moved into the palace chambers and built homes between the original pillars. The basement halls held a massive garbage dump for centuries until archaeologists cleared them to reveal the imperial design.
