Knjižara Morpurgo

The Knjižara Morpurgo sits on the Pjaca with a faded, hand-painted sign hanging above its entrance. Vid Morpurgo opened this bookstore in eighteen sixty, intending to create a hub for the Croatian National Revival. During the late nineteenth century, the shop served as the primary gathering spot for intellectuals, writers, and politicians who argued for Dalmatia’s cultural independence. Even today, the interior retains the original wooden shelves and iron gallery that Morpurgo installed to house his massive collection of regional journals and European literature.
