The Fishmarket in Split sits inside a secession-style building from eighteen ninety, identifiable by its bright yellow facade and the iron gates that keep it airy. It was built specifically to solve a problem of hygiene in the old port, moving vendors from the open street into a dedicated space. Ante Bezić, who managed the market for decades, once said the smell of the place was the true scent of the city. He kept the morning auctions running with a heavy hand.
