Old Jewish cemetery

The Marjan hill cemetery holds a distinct, irregular stone wall enclosure that separates it from the pine forest above Split. Founded in the sixteenth century, this site served as the burial ground for the city's Jewish community for over four hundred years. In the late eighteen hundreds, local leaders expanded the plot, placing headstones on the steep, terraced slopes. During the second world war, Italian occupying forces shuttered the gates, leaving the rows of inscribed markers to weather in silence for decades.
