Rampart Cornaro

The Cornaro Rampart is the massive stone fortification wall that stretches along the northern edge of Diocletian’s Palace. It was built by the Venetians in the seventeenth century, specifically to protect the city from Ottoman attacks. During the construction, laborers scavenged stone from the ancient Roman ruins nearby, effectively using pieces of the past to build a shield for the future. Today, the rampart acts as a sturdy elevated promenade where the modern city of Split meets the antique core.
