The high, wrought-iron gates of the Parc de la Folie Saint-James guard a garden that once contained a miniature version of the Roman Colosseum. Claude Baudard de Saint-James, a treasurer to the Navy under King Louis the sixteenth, built this estate in the seventeen seventies. He filled the grounds with massive rocks, artificial grottos, and an intricate waterfall system to impress his guests. When he went bankrupt, the estate was sold off, and most of those eccentric stone structures vanished into history.
