The Square Van Vollenhoven sits tucked between high residential blocks, identifiable by a dense grove of mature chestnut trees that shades almost the entire lawn. The city cleared this patch of land in the nineteen seventies to break up a cluster of dense housing projects. It takes its name from a French naval officer who died in combat during the Second World War. Most people who pass through here today use the short gravel paths as a shortcut between the surrounding apartment buildings.
