The Grande Volière in the Jardin d'Acclimatation features a sweeping, curved mesh of iron held up by slender columns that vanish into the surrounding tree canopy. Built in eighteen sixty, it originally housed exotic birds brought from the far reaches of the French Empire to delight Parisians. During the Siege of Paris in eighteen seventy, the birds were sold for food to hungry citizens. Today, the structure remains as a skeletal cage, housing various species of birds under its high, vaulted ceiling.
