The iron skeleton of the old roller coaster, the Scenic Railway, used to dominate the skyline at Porte Maillot. Between nineteen oh nine and nineteen forty-eight, Luna Park drew crowds with a massive water chute, mechanical dancing halls, and a theater built to look like a burning building. It was the first American-style amusement park in Paris, brought over by a showman who saw how much people loved the spectacle at the World's Fair. By the nineteen fifties, the rides were silent.
