Butte du Chapeau Rouge

The Butte du Chapeau Rouge sits on a rugged mound of gypsum, where jagged cliffs drop sharply into the park below. During the nineteen thirties, the city turned this former quarry into a landscaped garden, commissioning architect Leon Azema to integrate the site's dramatic topography. Stone masonry staircases snake through the greenery, and heavy, stepped fountain basins catch rainwater runoff. People come here to see the monolithic stone statue of Saint Fiacre, the patron saint of gardeners, carved right into the rock.
