The Lycée Carnot is recognizable by the long, glass-covered promenade that runs through its center, a structure designed to protect students from the Parisian rain. Built in eighteen sixty-nine, the school was originally named the École Monge. It served the families moving into the newly developed district. During the First World War, the military took over the building, stripping out the classrooms to create a hospital. Surgeons operated in the hallways, and soldiers recovered in the very rooms where geometry was once taught.
