Franz Joseph Straße nineteen is a four story apartment building wrapped in the muted, ochre stucco typical of Munich. Its most distinct feature is the pair of rounded, wrought iron balconies that protrude from the second floor like miniature stages. In nineteen twenty-one, the writer Thomas Mann lived here while finishing his novel, The Magic Mountain. He kept his desk near the windows, watching the daily rhythm of the street below while drafting the claustrophobic alpine atmosphere of his famous sanatorium.
