Staatliche Antikensammlungen

Thirty-two tall, Corinthian columns wrap around the front of the Staatliche Antikensammlungen, creating a temple-like facade that dominates the south side of Königsplatz. King Ludwig the First commissioned the building in the eighteen thirties to house his growing collection of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman antiquities. During the second world war, the structure suffered heavy damage from allied bombing raids. Restorers eventually rebuilt the interior to showcase delicate ancient pottery, including black-figure vases and intricate bronze works that once sat in royal cabinets.
