Max Joseph Platz forms a grand, open rectangle defined by the Residenz palace on one side and the National Theater on the other. King Maximilian the First Joseph commissioned this square in the early nineteenth century to create a stately entrance to his residence. During the second world war, bombs gutted the theater entirely. A citizens' initiative raised the funds to rebuild it, refusing to let the city lose its opera house. The bronze statue of the king sits motionless in the center.
