Propylaea

The Propylaea stands as a massive marble gateway marked by its thick, towering Doric columns arranged in three distinct portals. King Ludwig the First commissioned the structure in the middle of the nineteenth century to honor the Greek War of Independence and his own son, Otto, who became the King of Greece. Leo von Klenze designed the gate to mimic the entrance to the Athenian Acropolis. It remained the final building completed in the plaza, finished shortly after Otto lost his throne.
