Munich Residence

The Munich Residence is a sprawling complex of ten courtyards and one hundred and thirty rooms, defined by the distinct copper domes crowning the roofline of the central wings. This site served as the primary palace and seat of government for the Wittelsbach monarchs for over four centuries. During the seventeenth century, Duke Maximilian the First ordered the construction of the Grotto Courtyard, featuring a fountain topped by a bronze statue of Perseus holding the head of Medusa, pulled directly from classical mythology.
