Isar Gate

The Isar Gate stands as the only medieval city entrance in Munich with its flanking octagonal towers and central arch still intact. Built in the early fourteenth century under Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian, it served as the primary defense against attacks from the east. In eighteen thirty-seven, King Ludwig the First ordered a fresco added to the facade, depicting the return of his ancestor after a victory. The painting remains visible today, showing the emperor riding back into town surrounded by his troops.
