The Heilig Geist church sits at the edge of the Viktualienmarkt with a bright, pale facade that contrasts against the dark, heavy stone of the surrounding shops. Originally built in the fourteenth century as a hospital chapel, it survives as the oldest church in the city center. During the seventeen hundreds, architects remodeled the interior into an airy, light-filled space. A lightning strike destroyed the tower in the early nineteenth century, and workers replaced it with the current pointed spire.
