Maibaum Viktualienmarkt

A tall, blue-and-white striped pole rises from the center of the Viktualienmarkt, topped with a wreath and carved wooden figures. This is the Maibaum, a traditional Maypole. Each figure represents a different craft or trade, from the brewer to the butcher, reflecting the market's long history as the city's stomach. In nineteen sixty-two, a bitter rivalry sparked when a neighboring district attempted to saw the pole down under the cover of night. The theft attempt failed, leaving the pole standing.
