The bronze obelisk at the center of Königsplatz stands nearly twenty-four meters tall, cast from the metal of Turkish cannons captured during the naval Battle of Navarino in eighteen twenty-seven. King Ludwig the First commissioned the monument to honor his son, Otto, who became the first King of Greece. When Otto arrived in his new kingdom, he brought a collection of Bavarian artists and architects with him to modernize Athens. The obelisk remains here, marking that brief, complicated union between Munich and Greece.
