Isartor

The Isartor stands as a blocky, defensive gatehouse made of red brick, capped by a main tower flanked by two smaller octagonal turrets. It served as the eastern entry point for Munich in the fourteenth century, guarding the road toward the salt trade routes. Ludwig the Bavarian ordered its construction to protect the city’s expansion. In eighteen thirty-five, King Ludwig the First restored the gate, adding a massive fresco that depicts the triumphant return of his namesake ancestor after the Battle of Mühldorf.
