The New Town Hall dominates the north side of Marienplatz with its jagged limestone facade and a central tower that reaches over two hundred and seventy feet into the sky. Its dark, weathered walls are covered in hundreds of stone figures, including legendary Bavarian kings and local saints. When the city council moved here in eighteen seventy-four, the building housed not only administrative offices but also a massive police station and a jail in the basement.
