The Fischbrunnen features a bronze basin flanked by three small figures of butchers’ apprentices leaping into the water. This fountain stands directly in front of the Munich Town Hall at Marienplatz. Historically, the city’s fishmongers refreshed their catch in this basin to keep it alive for market day. In eighteen sixty-four, sculptor Konrad Knoll designed the current version using bronze figures cast by Ferdinand von Miller. Local apprentices once underwent a baptism here to mark the end of their training.
