St. Boniface's Abbey

St. Boniface's Abbey features a massive, red-brick facade modeled after Roman basilicas from the fifth century, complete with rows of rounded windows and a flat, unadorned roofline. King Ludwig the First commissioned this church in eighteen thirty-five to serve as his own final resting place and to reconnect the modern kingdom of Bavaria with its ancient Christian roots. During the second world war, bombs destroyed almost everything inside, leaving only the sturdy outer walls standing among the ruins of Munich.
