Siegestor

The Siegestor is a three-arched limestone monument crowned by a bronze chariot pulled by four lions. King Ludwig the First commissioned the arch in the mid-nineteenth century to honor his army, styling it after the Arch of Constantine in Rome. While it originally served as a gateway to celebrate military triumphs, the arch was heavily damaged during bombing raids in the second world war. It stands today with a plain brick back wall that commemorates its destruction and reconstruction, reading, dedicated to peace.
