The Platz der Opfer des Nationalsozialismus holds a massive, circular fountain encased in dark basalt. This square commemorates those persecuted by the Nazi regime, and its center features a bronze flame sculpture by Fritz Koenig. In nineteen eighty-nine, the city dedicated this space to victims of the dictatorship. Before this, the site housed a temporary building for the National Socialist party. When the post-war reconstruction began, officials cleared the site to reshape the urban landscape into a space for reflection.
