Theatine Church

The Theatine Church in Munich wears a bright, lemon-yellow facade that stands out against the gray stone of the surrounding city. Elector Ferdinand Maria commissioned this building in sixteen sixty-three as a thank-you gift for the birth of his long-awaited heir. He brought in architects from Italy to design it, resulting in the first high baroque church in Bavaria. During the air raids of nineteen forty-four, firebombs gutted the interior, leaving only the scorched walls behind to wait for reconstruction.
