Monopteros im Englischen Garten

The Monopteros sits on a fifteen-meter high hill made of rubble and earth, its ten slender Ionic columns supporting a circular, painted roof. King Ludwig the First commissioned the temple in eighteen thirty-six to honor the Wittelsbach dynasty. Architect Leo von Klenze built it to mimic ancient Greek architecture, placing it on a foundation salvaged from a demolished temple that stood nearby. For decades, students and strollers climbed the hill to escape the city noise, finding only the view and the stone.
