The Glyptothek features a wide, ionic portico topped with pediment sculptures that stand out against the surrounding stone. King Ludwig the First of Bavaria commissioned this building specifically to house his extensive collection of Greek and Roman marble statues. Before its completion in eighteen thirty, these antiquities sat in crates or private storage. Now, the sculptures occupy vaulted, brick-lined halls designed to mimic the atmosphere of the ancient world, putting the stone figures directly at eye level with anyone walking through the galleries.
