The Psaras Tavern features a stone facade tucked against the steep, winding staircases of the Plaka district, beneath the shadows of the Acropolis. Since eighteen ninety-eight, this spot served as a haunt for intellectuals, artists, and political figures who gathered here to eat and argue. One evening, a famous Greek songwriter forgot his wallet after a long dinner, and the owner simply told him to pay with a song. He stood on the patio and composed a ballad right there.
