Jameh Atigh Mosque

The Jameh Atigh Mosque is marked by a massive, central courtyard featuring a Khodakhaneh, or House of God, a stone structure built in the fourteenth century to store precious Qurans. Originally a Zoroastrian fire temple, the site was converted into a mosque during the ninth century under the Saffarid dynasty. In nineteen thirty-six, the poet Fereydoon Tavallali famously climbed to the roof of the prayer hall to protest the demolition of parts of the structure, effectively stopping the local authorities from dismantling the site.
