Sibouye Tomb

The Sibouye Tomb sits inside a vaulted stone niche, marked by two carved stone lions guarding the entrance to a small, quiet courtyard. Sibouye was an eighth-century linguist who moved from Shiraz to Basra, where he authored the first systematic grammar of the Arabic language. He spent his final years returning to his hometown, where he eventually died. Scholars still study his massive book, the Kitab, to understand how the rules of Arabic took shape over a thousand years ago.
