The Vakil Bazaar features a distinct vaulted ceiling of baked brick, with high, arched corridors that keep the interior remarkably cool against the heat of Shiraz. Karim Khan Zand commissioned this marketplace in the eighteenth century to centralize the city's trade. Legend holds that the ruler visited a nearby town, saw a superior bazaar, and ordered his architects to replicate its grandeur here. Merchants still occupy the small alcoves lining the pathways, selling hand-woven carpets and brass goods just as they have for generations.
